I have recently just returned from Haiti. It was an extremely difficult place to be. What is most surprising is that the poverty this country is facing is in some ways more intense than many of the places in Africa I have traveled. It is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and what shocks me most is how close to America it is. It is unbelievable to me that aid cannot reach this country in a quicker fashion. Like most 3rd world countries it is struggling with HIV, poverty, illiteracy, crime, food shortages and corrupt government. -C.Kuehl

Haiti is my country, even though I am American born, all my family and heritage roots back strongly from this small island. I really love Haiti, I constantly worry about its future and possiblities of it overcoming it's issues.
Christopher Kuehl took some amazing shots in black in white which showed the harsh realities a lot people in Haiti live. Its sort of weird that rotating the camera a few degrees in a lot of these images probably show some of the most serene views of ocean water and palm trees. Its a weird balance, the island is beautiful, but its self destructing from a lot of factors, like no proper sanitation, burning of trash on the side the streets, overly cutting down trees for charcoal, and a lot more issues.
If anyone was moved by these images at all, I would recommend contacting one of your local church's or organizations that run missions to countries such as Haiti. There are a lot of misconceptions people will put into your mind about traveling to Haiti or any 3rd world country, but I would see it for yourself.
(Don't get me wrong, in the airport you can easily get scammed if you not careful.)
Plus talk to someone that visited that place before in a mission (I have visited Haiti many times before to visit family, but going to the same country on a mission trip is another experience which frames things a lot differently).
